Coffs Harbour Daybreak Rotary Club is enjoying an exciting and eventful 2024

As 2024 draws to a close a quick look back on some of the highlights of the year. In October we held our unique flagship RYMarine program for 23 aspiring high school marine scientists. RYMarine is for young people who are keen to pursue marine studies and marine based careers.  The program was a great success with terrific feedback received from students and parents alike.

The young participants engaged in laboratory experiments at the National Marine Science Centre, went whale-watching with Jetty Dive, experienced scuba diving in the War Memorial pool under the supervision of dive-masters at Jetty Dive, got to hear the history of aboriginal culture and practices on walks and kayaking activities with National Parks officers and visited Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour which included an exhilirating ride on their rescue boat CH30.

On the Saturday evening, they attended a dinner event with parents /carers where participation awards were given to the students and everyone enjoyed heard a marvellous keynote speech from ex Marine Parks Officer Brett Vercoe on the phenomenal wildlife of the Solitary Islands Marine Park .

Earlier this year we sponsored a local, young attendee, Cloe Flaherty, to the National Youth Science Forum in Brisbane.

In June, we were delighted to sponsor Ashlee Geddes and Nada Ali to attend the renowned Rotary Youth Leadership Academy at Stuarts Point(RYLA). A fantastic opportunity for these deserving young applicants from diverse backgrounds

We have had great success with our Swimming program for recently arrived refugees, and our long-term support to deserving local causes such as the Disabled Surfers Association, the amazing Deaf Camp, Coffs Harbour’s local Parkinsons Support Group and the Mental Health Unit at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital continues. Over the past few years we been involved with many other exciting local and international community projects including:

To help fund these and other deserving causes we have our annual much loved Golf Day at Coffs Harbour Golf Club, an annual Trivia Night and the fantastic Lantern Festival in the Japanese Gardens at Coffs Botanic Gardens,  We are proud  to assist  the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour with the annual Rotary Bookfest and we have many other exciting fund-raising ideas on our future agenda. All need your support!

Our annual Changeover Dinner was at the Coffs Harbour Golf Club on Friday 6th July was a great success and we congratulate all those elected to our new board for 2024-25.

Looking forward to 2025 and a brand new & exciting fund-raising event for us – the inaugural Coffs Harbour Walking Football Charity Shield!  Scheduled for March 1st at Coffs Harbour Synthetics we are inviting 20 companies, organisations or simply groups of like-minded people, to participate in a fun day of Walking Football to raise funds for local charities who offer sporting and leisure opportunities to those members of our community who may otherwise be unable to particpate.

Essentially it’s soccer but not as we know it!  Walking only – no running!  As a new soccer code, it’s growing very quickly and is very inclusive with all ages, all abilities and mixed teams the norm – the walking factor is the great leveller. For example on a Wednesday evening at the Coffs Synthetics we usually have around 15 or so male and female participants ranging from mid-30’s to an 82 year old!
It’s played on a 6-a-side field which is a quarter size of a full-size soccer field. Small goals, a lighter ball and next to no physical contact.
A maximum of 6 on the field at any one time with a squad size of 10 suggested to allow for rotation. Games will be either 30 or 40 minutes long with a break for half-time.
We envisage a maximum of 20  teams playing in groups of 4 or 5 with top 2 going into Division 1 play-off groups and remainder into Division 2 play-off groups, followed by semi finals and grand-finals. the idea being plenty of game time for all participants.  In February we will arrange a couple of introduction /familiarisation sessions on Wednesday evenings for those who would like to get a feel for the game before the tournament.
The donation (entry)  fee is a minimum 🙂per team of $1,000.   All funds raised will be distributed amongst local youth projects for the disadvantaged with a sport and recreation bias.
We are aiming to provide a fun, colourful gala day atmosphere with local music acts and food options. As the games will be played on the world-class Coffs Synthetics at the stadium precinct, weather is not a big issue as we only stop for thunderstorms and there are great changing and shower facilities. For an entry form click here, for more information please call Marilyn or Ian.
